South Gippsland Landcare in collaboration with the Victorian Rabbit Action Group (VRAN) is hosting a comprehensive rabbit control course, also known as the Rabbit Bootcamp. The bootcamp spans 2 days and combines classroom instruction with practical field-based training.
This course is accessible to all South Gippsland Residents currently engaged in and/or planning rabbit management on private or public land. Private landowners, public land managers and private contractors are all encouraged to apply. A willingness to share what you are learned with your community is highly regarded.
The course dates are the November 20th and 21st 9am-3:30pm daily
This course will be held in Leongatha and at a nearby property. Theory topics covered are
- Understanding the biology & ecology of rabbits
- Impacts of rabbits in the landscape
- The ‘Rabbit Recipe’: actions and plans that ensure that Best Practice Rabbit Management is implemented
- Cultural Heritage Act 2006. Working with Registered Aboriginal Parties and Traditional Owners
- Establishing a monitoring transect to estimate rabbit populations. Implementing a baiting program including how and where to lay a bait trail.
Field demonstrations will include
- Inspecting a bait trail to plan the next steps in baiting.
- Assessing rabbit populations using the ‘Rapid Rabbit Assessment’ methodology.
- Above ground burrow inspection: How and why a smoker should be used.
- The profile of a burrow
- Fumigation
- Ripping
- Implosion
