SUMMARY:Farm Walk : Creating Wetlands & Protecting Paddock Trees
DESCRIPTION:We are supporting a Poowong beef farmer with two on-farm demonstration sites: creating a wetland in a boggy paddock\, and fencing a threatened Strzelecki Gum paddock tree. \nJoin us to see what’s planned for these sites and how we’re going about it — plus the chance to explore a sustainable\, resilient\, and productive farm in action. \nREGISTER HERE \nWhat to expect \n\nWetland Ecologist David Carew will walk us through the plan to transform a boggy\, unproductive paddock into a seasonal wetland.\nEcologist Alison Oates will guide you through identifying local eucalypts — including the threatened Strzelecki Gum and Southern Bluegum — and discuss the benefits of fencing off paddock trees for long-term shade and biodiversity.\nProperty owner Scott Bentleigh will share his experience growing multispecies crops and integrating agroforestry on his property.\n\nLunch and refreshments included. Please notify us of any dietary requirements. \nAddress provided upon registration. \nREGISTER HERE \nThis event is supported by the Australian Government through the National Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.

SUMMARY:Electro Fishing on the Tarwin - See What's Beneath the Surface!
DESCRIPTION:Attention fishing and river enthusiasts! \nJoin South Gippsland Landcare Network along with Austral Consulting for a live electrofishing demonstration and discover what fish species call the Tarwin River home. \nElectrofishing is a safe and effective method that uses an electric current to temporarily stun fish\, helping scientists understand fish populations and improve habitats. This family-friendly event offers a rare opportunity to learn about river health\, water quality\, and the native aquatic life of the Tarwin River. \nThe West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority will be there to share river knowledge and answer any questions. \nA light lunch will also be provided. \nREGISTER HERE! \nWe can’t wait to see you there! \nFor further info\, please email morgan@sgln.net.au \nThis event is made possible by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority and OzFish.

SUMMARY:How (and Why) to Kill a Fox
DESCRIPTION:Foxes are declared pest animals in Victoria and are thought to have played a major part in the demise and extinction of many ground-dwelling native species in the last 130 years.\n\nThey cost an estimated $17.5 million in sheep production losses and $190 million in environmental impacts.\n\nAt this workshop\, you’ll hear from Aaron Stephens Bass Coast Landcare Network’s Invasive Species team for a demonstration on planning and implementing a fox control program\, followed by a walk at Bald Hills Wetland.\n\nNo live baits for poisons will be used at this event. If you have concerns about the safety of using baiting as a control method\, this is the perfect event to come to and ask questions.\n\n Lunch IncludedREGISTER HERE:https://events.humanitix.com/how-to-kill-a-fox\nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Partnerships against Pests program. SUMMARY:What's Eating Your Pasture? Practical Integrated Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:Want to better understand what’s happening in your pasture\, and how to make more informed pest management decisions? \nJoin South Gippsland Landcare Network for an informative field day with leading Australian Integrated Pest Management (IPM) specialist Dr Paul Horne from IPM Technologies. \nREGISTER HERE \nPaul will be talking about pest management with minimal reliance on insecticides – called Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM involves using naturally occurring biological control agents and management techniques to either encourage beneficial species or discourage pests. If insecticides are involved it is as a support tool and not the mainstay of pest management. Correct identification of both pest and beneficial species is important and this means being able to recognise all life stages from egg to adult. \nLearn more about some of the common pest insects that may be impacting your pasture\, such as slugs\, redlegged earth mite\, blue oat mite\, blackheaded cockchafer and lucerne flea. \nThe session is aimed at beef\, dairy and pasture-based farmers\, but is open to anyone who is interested. Paul will be talking about: \n• Common pasture pests and the damage they cause\n• Beneficial insects and the role they play in pest control\n• Monitoring techniques to assess what is happening in your paddocks\n• The impact of pesticides on pest and beneficial species\n• Practical IPM strategies to reduce pest pressure and support healthier pastures \nThe day will include a presentation followed by a paddock walk\, giving you the chance to identify insects in the field and discuss practical management options relevant to your farm. \nMorning tea and lunch provided. \nThis event is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the National Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program
