SUMMARY:Giant Gippsland Earthworm Field day
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the threatened Giant Gippsland Earthworm (GGE)\, actions being taken to protect it\, and an innovative research study. \nDr Beverley Van Praagh has been studying and working to protect the GGE for over 30 years. She will tell us all about this secretive species that spends its whole life underground\, including:\n– Where GGE’s occur\n– How landholders can find GGE colonies on their property\n– What we can do to protect this threatened species \nDr Michael Alberton (Principal Ecologist at Water Technology) is measuring the soil moisture\, temperature and oxygen below the ground\, in and around GGE colonies on a farm at Arawata. This pilot study will run for 18 months. Michael will share the preliminary results of this research\, which is helping us learn more about the conditions GGE’s need to survive (in our changing climate). \nWe will also visit a GGE colony near by. Just keep in mind the worms stay underground but we might be lucky enough to hear one \nWe’ll also share another exciting project which is just starting – a census of the GGE – and will share a new app we have developed that landholders will be able to use to record the location of GGE colonies. \nPlease register https://events.humanitix.com/giant-gippsland-earthworm-field-day \nmore info email cassie@sgln.net.au \nThis project received grant funding from the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program.

DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Farming in Action: Making Bioferts\, Agroforestry and Erosion Control\nIntro to bioferts presentation plus a farm walk in Yanakie \nJoin us for this field day showcasing multiple sustainable agricultural practices. \nDaniel Hodges from Soil\, Water and Plants will give an introduction to biofertilizers – what they are\, how they can benefit and be applied on farm\, and how to make them. \nRobert Tracy will share stories of actions that he\, Sandra and farm manager Brad have taken on the Yanakie farm. The farm is adjacent to Shallow Inlet and carries a mix of beef cattle and young dairy cattle on agistment from two local dairy farms. \nRobert will discuss their experiments with making and applying bioferts\, agroforestry trial sites\, and an erosion remediation project about to commence. \nFollowing the presentations\, we’ll visit the farm for a closer look. \nPlease register https://events.humanitix.com/bioferts-field-day-and-farm-walk \nFor more info\, please email cassie@sgln.net.au \nLunch and refreshments provided. \nPlease notify us of any dietary requirements \nThe South Gippsland Landcare Network is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.

SUMMARY:Revegetation of a Riparian Zone - Tarwin River Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Nerrena Tarwin Valley Landcare for a river walk to see revegetation along a section of the East Tarwin branch of the Tarwin River. The one-to-two-hour walk will be guided by Matt Bowler from West Gippsland CMA. Arrive between 1.30 and 2 PM for a 2 PM start. \nAll welcome but please RSVP to Phil on 0428 642 371 to help with logistics. \nIn 2015 WGCMA commenced works to restore this section of the riverbank. At the time it was unfenced and thick with willow trees. The willows were poisoned and removed\, the riverbank was fenced and some 2\,000 natives were planted. The following year the billabong on the flats was also fenced and planted. \nCome and see the progress of this “good news” story. \nLocation: drive into the paddock through a road gate at approximately 145 Meeniyan-Nerrena rd\, Meeniyan. This is more or less opposite “Ballanard”\, a dairy farm at 140 Meeniyan-Nerrena rd. Join us at the river after driving/walking through the paddock. Look out for the sign. Unless it’s wet you will be able to park in the paddock. \nWhat to bring: sturdy shoes and suitable clothing. Most of the walking will be done in the paddock along the fence-line with the river bank\, which is flat and not overgrown. You may also wish to walk within the revegetation zone but this is obviously overgrown. \n  \nNote: this is not an SGLN event.

SUMMARY:Biolinks Map - online information session
DESCRIPTION:South Gippsland Landcare Network is excited to have started work on the South Gippsland Biolinks Map. This is a key action of the Biodiversity Protection Plan. \nWhen complete\, the Biolinks Map will be an online tool to help understand how native species move through our region. It will draw on a range of land cover and biodiversity datasets\, as well as stakeholder input\, to model areas of core habitat in the landscape\, and the pathways different species may use to move between them. This will give us a map showing the key locations and movement corridors across the region\, their relative importance and where opportunities exist to improve or establish pathways. \nThis will help to inform where on-ground action will have the most impact\, so we can focus our efforts in the most effective way. \nJoin us to meet James and Yasmin who are developing the map\, learn about how the biolinks map will be created and what it will look like\, and how you can get involved. \nmore info cassie@sgln.net.au \nRegistrations \nimage credit: Lechner 2017

SUMMARY:Best practice Rabbit and Fox Control.
DESCRIPTION:Best practice Rabbit and Fox Control. Workshop and Field Demonstration \nRIGHT NOW IS THE KEY TIME FOR RABBIT CONTROL \nWhen the ground is dry and food becomes more scarce it is the best time to control rabbits. \nAt this workshop Aaron Stephens head of the bass coast Invasive Species Team will discuss how to run an multi pronged control program on your property giving you the best results. We will also cover the best options for fox control. \nEcologist Peter Gannon will discuss wildlife of South Gippsland that is impacted or threatened by these introduced pests. \nWe will then visit a nearby property for a practical demonstration of laying bait trails\, setting traps and using a fumigation device. For demonstration purposes no toxic chemicals will be used. \nLunch and refreshments provided \nRegister via this link \nQuestions to kirby@sgln.net.au \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Partnerships against Pests program
