SUMMARY:Bugs Eating Your Pasture? Practical Integrated Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:Want to better understand what’s happening in your pasture\, and how to make more informed pest management decisions? \nJoin South Gippsland Landcare Network for an informative field day with leading Australian Integrated Pest Management (IPM) specialist Dr Paul Horne from IPM Technologies. \nREGISTER HERE \nPaul will be talking about pest management with minimal reliance on insecticides – called Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM involves using naturally occurring biological control agents and management techniques to either encourage beneficial species or discourage pests. If insecticides are involved it is as a support tool and not the mainstay of pest management. Correct identification of both pest and beneficial species is important and this means being able to recognise all life stages from egg to adult. \nLearn more about some of the common pest insects that may be impacting your pasture\, such as slugs\, redlegged earth mite\, blue oat mite\, blackheaded cockchafer and lucerne flea. \nThe session is aimed at beef\, dairy and pasture-based farmers\, but is open to anyone who is interested. Paul will be talking about: \n• Common pasture pests and the damage they cause\n• Beneficial insects and the role they play in pest control\n• Monitoring techniques to assess what is happening in your paddocks\n• The impact of pesticides on pest and beneficial species\n• Practical IPM strategies to reduce pest pressure and support healthier pastures \nThe day will include a presentation followed by a paddock walk\, giving you the chance to identify insects in the field and discuss practical management options relevant to your farm. \nMorning tea and lunch provided. \nThis event is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the National Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a field day to launch our South Gippsland Dairy Resilience Initiative. The day is hosted by Waratah Bay dairy farmers Stuart Tracy and family\, with multispecies specialist Jade Killoran. It’s a shared field day between South Gippsland Landcare Network and GippsDairy. \nREGISTER HERE \nStuart will share his experience of reworking how the farm manages its soil\, pasture and inputs and seen major benefits. \nThe Tracy family run a 600-cow dairy is on 700 acres adjacent to Waratah Bay\, and have been farming there since 1980. \nThe day will start nearby at Sandy Point Community Centre\, where we’ll; \n\nhear from Stu Tracy about why they’ve made changes to their farming methods\nlearn about the results of the previous demo site on the farm\, and what the new demo site is looking at\nhear from Jade Killoran (Healthy Farming Systems) about the benefits of trialling multispecies pastures\n\n  \nFollowing a free lunch\, we’ll visit the farm – this is your chance to see it firsthand\, hear the story\, and ask the Tracys about their experiences. \n– Walk the paddocks and see the trial plots \n– Hear directly from Stuart and Angus about the journey\, the setbacks\, and what’s next \n– Hear from Jade Killoran on the science behind the results \n  \nThe day will also kick off the new Dairy Resilience project which dairy farmers are invited to join by submitting an EOI: https://forms.gle/qB92xFZYgLHTRgxFA \n  \nFor more info please email cassie@sgln.net.au\, or 0448 739 559. \n  \nLunch and refreshments provided. \nPlease notify us of any dietary requirements. \n  \nAs this is a joint event with GippsDairy\, participant info will be shared with GippsDairy. \nThe Dairy Resilience Project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust. DESCRIPTION:This FREE whole farm planning course is perfect for those new to farming or anyone wanting to elevate their knowledge in climate smart farming and how to improve their natural capital for a more sustainable future. \nEXPRESS YOUR INTEREST HERE!\n\nThis 7 session course will be made up of 7 in-person workshops run weekly starting Thursday October 15th. There will be 5 farm visits to see how experienced local farmers are managing their natural assets. The Victorian Farmers Federation will deliver a sixth practical session\, and the course will finish with a session completing participants’s whole farm plans. Experienced Landcare facilitator and sustainable agriculture consultant Peter Ronalds from Inspired AG Solutions will be at each workshop and will guide people to complete their whole farm plan.\n\nIn addition participants who would like to use digital mapping may attend a pre-course Google Earth mapping workshop held on Wednesday 7th October – book here\n\nParticipants will also receive: \n– A poster-side laminated aerial photograph of their property\, which they will use as a base to develop their whole farm plan.\n– A copy of the book ‘Stock and Waterways’\n– A copy of Natural Asset Farming\n– Morning tea and lunch at each session\n\n\nParticipating in this program will set you up for success by giving you the knowledge and tools to manage the natural assets on your farm in a changing climate. Neil brings a rare blend of global sustainability experience and grassroots local action. After a 35-year corporate career\, including leading international food waste initiatives with the UN\, FAO\, and WWF\, Neil made the move “from the desk to the dirt\,” returning home to South Gippsland. Today he’s President of the Leongatha Community Garden and Leongatha Community Market\, and a steering committee member of the Bass Coast South Gippsland Food System Alliance\, championing local food hubs and distribution networks to build a resilient\, self-reliant food economy for our region. \nWe’ll also be sharing details on our Biolinks Map project — including what it means for landholders\, how it was developed\, and how you can get involved or raise any questions. \nTickets are $15.00 per person and include canapés on arrival. Additional food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
