SUMMARY:Enhancing farm dams for stock and biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:What difference does a year make?\nCome and see the changes that have occurred since Jillian Staton & Bruce Whittaker altered their farm dam to restrict stock access for productivity and biodiversity outcomes. We will discuss the results of monitoring to compare the impacts of three different farm management systems (restricted\, total stock exclusion and unrestricted access) on: \n\nwater quality\nmacroinvertebrate (waterbug) levels\nfrogs\, wildlife and pest species.\n\nWe will also hear about: \n\nthe role farm dams can play in native fish conservation strategies.\nmanaging vegetation around farm dams\, including azola and phragmites.\n\nPresenters include: \n\nJillian Staton: a landholder’s perspective\nTy Matthews (Deakin University) & students Jasper Davis and Balin Branch-Spence\nDavid Carew (Carew Environmental)\nMatt Bowler (WGCMA)\n\nWhen  \nThursday\, 18 April 2023  \n10.30am – 2.30pm  \nLunch included  \nWhere  \nCape Liptrap  \nAddress provided after registration  \nRegister here \nPlaces are limited.   \nRegistration essential.  \nMore information  \ncassie@sgln.net.au  \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:FIELD DAY: Community Information and Field Day on Giant Gippsland Earthworm Habitat\, Identification and Management.
DESCRIPTION:‘Enhanced Knowledge and Protection of the Giant Gippsland Earthworm’ project. \nThe Bass Coast Landcare Network and project partners (including SGLN) invite you to this exciting Giant Gippsland Earthworm community information and field day. \nGiant Gippsland Earthworms are only found in an area roughly the size of 40\,000 ha in South and West Gippsland\, Victoria. The majority of its known current habitat is on farmland and farmers can play a vital role in its conservation and management. It is essential that farmers and land managers continue to work together to manage valuable habitat in ways that protect and enhance GGE habitat\, ensuring that the earthworms continue to survive and thrive. \nThis community workshop will cover: \n\nGiant Gippsland Earthworm distribution and biology\nHabitat identification and management requirements\nLandforms and associated Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs)\nModified revegetation planting lists and densities\nHabitat sensitive management guidelines\nA nearby farm walk to known Giant Gippsland Earthworm colonies\n\nTo RSVP please email Joel Geoghegan on joel.geoghegan@basscoastlandcare.org.au or call on 0409 705 652.
