SUMMARY:Managing Landslip on Farms with Nick Dudley
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided farm walk in the Strzelecki with local agricultural advisor and farmer\, Nick Dudley. Nick will point out various landslip and erosion features and discuss how these can be managed. \nREGISTER HERE! \nWhen: 10am\, Wednesday 1 April 2026\nWhere: Strzelecki (address available after registration)\nCost: Free!  Please bring: Closed toe shoes\, sunsmart clothing\, camp chair\, hat\, drink bottle and landslip questions! Morning tea supplied. \nClick here to register or search:  https://events.humanitix.com/managing-landslips-with-nick-dudley \nABOUT THIS EVENT: \nLandslips have significant impacts on farm productivity and the environment\, and the hills of South Gippsland are no exception; but there are things you can do to manage and reduce their frequency and impact. The day will kick off at 10am at a farm in Strzelecki where we will inspect and assess a significant landslip and discuss management options. Nick will demonstrate what can be done to manage slips and measures for reducing future slips and erosion. Please be sure to where comfortable\, closed toe shoes suitable for walking across paddocks and steep terrain. \nThis event is co-hosted by the South Gippsland Landcare Network and Hallston Regenerative Agriculture Group and funded by the Victorian Landcare Grants program via West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority. \nAbout the expert presenter – Nick Dudley \nNick was previously Regional Manager of Meat and Wool Services and worked extensively with the Sustainable Landscapes team within Agricultural Victoria. He led Agriculture Victoria’s response to major Landslip events which occurred in South and West Gippsland following extreme rainfall years in 2012 and 2021.  Nick also instigated the development of soil management plans for individual farmers. Nick will discuss the causes of landslips and what you can do to manage them.

SUMMARY:Greening Dams - Benefits to Productivity and Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Enhancing a dam is a simple way to improve productivity and increase biodiversity on your property. \nDuring this information session and farm walk you will learn about the key findings of 25 years of research from the Australian National University Sustainable Farms Project. Witness first hand the ‘before and after’ story at the properties of experienced beef farmers Paul and Sam Crock. \nPaul and Sam have spent more than 20 years making improvements to their Foster property and have recently begun the process again. They are dedicated to having a sustainable and environmentally sensitive operation. Learn how they have balanced improving their land for the environment while running a successful enterprise and prioritising stock health. \nWould you like native fish in your dam? Chris Lamin is a local small bodied native fish breeder and supplier\, learn about the habitat requirements to have these fish in your dam. \nClick here to register Lunch and refreshments provided – please email dietary requirements to kirby@sgln.net.au \nThis project is supported by SGLN\, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund\, the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub (Vic Hub) and Food & Fibre Gippsland as the South-East Node of the Vic Hub. \nPhoto credit – Food and Fibre Gippsland

SUMMARY:Dry season – preparing for Spring & Summer
DESCRIPTION:With low rainfall\, and minimal hay and silage stocks\, we need to ensure we have the knowledge and confidence to plan for and manage a potentially dry spring and summer. \nThis day will provide farmers with an opportunity to hear other farmers talk about their strategies in managing current conditions\, get the latest information\, and have a meal together. \nPresenters include; \nDale Grey (the Fast Break) – weather outlook\, and what we can expect in the next few months. \nFiona Baker – setting ourselves up for spring\, and summer\, water requirements\, and maximising our potential growth leading into our peak growing season \nJames Paulet – will talk about the 6 new soil moisture probes and weather stations located in West/South Gippsland and using this data to make informed decisions \nFarmers Chris Nixon (Beef & Dairy – Orbost) and Trevor Caithness (beef & cropping – Goon Nure) will talk about strategies they implemented to get through the 3 year drought in East Gippsland. What worked & what didn’t\, and what they would do better next time. \n  \nAfter lunch we will visit Ross Batten & Madeline & Bernard Buckley’s farm\, and discuss strategies they are implementing in preparation for a potentially dry spring and summer. \nMorning tea and lunch provided\, and registrations essential\, please register via clicking on this link. \nFor more information contact cassie@sgln.net.au or 0448 739 559. \nThis event is a combined event between SGLN’s Sustainable Ag Discussion Group with Pete Ronalds from Inspired Ag Solutions. \nThis event is supported by Agriculture Victoria’s Drought Support Package\, Food and Fibre Gippsland\, and the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.

SUMMARY:Revegetation of a Riparian Zone - Tarwin River Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Nerrena Tarwin Valley Landcare for a river walk to see revegetation along a section of the East Tarwin branch of the Tarwin River. The one-to-two-hour walk will be guided by Matt Bowler from West Gippsland CMA. Arrive between 1.30 and 2 PM for a 2 PM start. \nAll welcome but please RSVP to Phil on 0428 642 371 to help with logistics. \nIn 2015 WGCMA commenced works to restore this section of the riverbank. At the time it was unfenced and thick with willow trees. The willows were poisoned and removed\, the riverbank was fenced and some 2\,000 natives were planted. The following year the billabong on the flats was also fenced and planted. \nCome and see the progress of this “good news” story. \nLocation: drive into the paddock through a road gate at approximately 145 Meeniyan-Nerrena rd\, Meeniyan. This is more or less opposite “Ballanard”\, a dairy farm at 140 Meeniyan-Nerrena rd. Join us at the river after driving/walking through the paddock. Look out for the sign. Unless it’s wet you will be able to park in the paddock. \nWhat to bring: sturdy shoes and suitable clothing. Most of the walking will be done in the paddock along the fence-line with the river bank\, which is flat and not overgrown. You may also wish to walk within the revegetation zone but this is obviously overgrown. \n  \nNote: this is not an SGLN event.

SUMMARY:Best practice Rabbit and Fox Control.
DESCRIPTION:Best practice Rabbit and Fox Control. Workshop and Field Demonstration \nRIGHT NOW IS THE KEY TIME FOR RABBIT CONTROL \nWhen the ground is dry and food becomes more scarce it is the best time to control rabbits. \nAt this workshop Aaron Stephens head of the bass coast Invasive Species Team will discuss how to run an multi pronged control program on your property giving you the best results. We will also cover the best options for fox control. \nEcologist Peter Gannon will discuss wildlife of South Gippsland that is impacted or threatened by these introduced pests. \nWe will then visit a nearby property for a practical demonstration of laying bait trails\, setting traps and using a fumigation device. For demonstration purposes no toxic chemicals will be used. \nLunch and refreshments provided \nRegister via this link \nQuestions to kirby@sgln.net.au \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Partnerships against Pests program
