SUMMARY:Giant Gippsland Earthworm Field day
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about the threatened Giant Gippsland Earthworm (GGE)\, actions being taken to protect it\, and an innovative research study. \nDr Beverley Van Praagh has been studying and working to protect the GGE for over 30 years. She will tell us all about this secretive species that spends its whole life underground\, including:\n– Where GGE’s occur\n– How landholders can find GGE colonies on their property\n– What we can do to protect this threatened species \nDr Michael Alberton (Principal Ecologist at Water Technology) is measuring the soil moisture\, temperature and oxygen below the ground\, in and around GGE colonies on a farm at Arawata. This pilot study will run for 18 months. Michael will share the preliminary results of this research\, which is helping us learn more about the conditions GGE’s need to survive (in our changing climate). \nWe will also visit a GGE colony near by. Just keep in mind the worms stay underground but we might be lucky enough to hear one \nWe’ll also share another exciting project which is just starting – a census of the GGE – and will share a new app we have developed that landholders will be able to use to record the location of GGE colonies. \nPlease register https://events.humanitix.com/giant-gippsland-earthworm-field-day \nmore info email cassie@sgln.net.au \nThis project received grant funding from the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program.
